Autumn Classes

ABOUT THE CLASSES

We are happy to announce a new beginners’ class starting this autumn! We want to give all newbies a warm welcome, so if you’ve been curious about Forró, now is the time to join! Forró Beginners 1 is aimed for you who are brand new to forró, or who have taken less than one semester of classes.

Forró Beginners 2 is aimed for you who have some prior experience, about 1-3 semesters of forró classes, and want to continue your learning. Forró Intermediate requires more experience, we recommend at least 1 year of forró classes, see the list of requirements below.

We also have one class in Samba de Gafieira, open level. Join whatever your prior experience is! Samba de Gafieira is a slightly more technical dance, but full of swing and groove. It originates from Rio de Janeiro, where our teacher Ian Martinelle is from and where he learned the dance. It’s a great pleasure to be able to offer classes in this amazing dance style!

ABOUT THE TEACHERS

Ian Martinelle is a dance teacher from Rio de Janeiro with over ten years of experience in various dance styles, specializing in forró and samba de gafieira. He has developed his own teaching method for forró and written a book about musicality in dance.

Lovisa Österberg discovered forró and samba de gafieira while living in Rio de Janeiro for her studies. Since then, she has continued to deepen her knowledge and passion for Brazilian social dance.

Together, Ian and Lovisa founded Chama, an organisation dedicated to Brazilian social dance, community, and learning. They regularly travel to Rio de Janeiro to further explore and study samba de gafieira.

Johanna Sontheimer is a folk dance teacher with a Bachelor’s degree from Stockholm University of the Arts. She has been dancing for many years, with forró as one of her great passions alongside a wide range of other dance styles.

Her interest in Brazilian dances has taken her to Brazil, where she travelled to study forró in Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, and Salvador.

Her classes focus on connection, musicality, movement, and—above all—the joy of dancing together.
